scholarship established in 1992 by the firm of ogletree, deakins, nash, smoak & stewart in memory of their partner, dixie lee atwater, class of 1976, to support students who show financial need and/or strong academic ability. aycock-poe scholarship established in honor of charles b. aycock, lawyer and governor of north carolina from 1901 to 1905; william b. aycock, kenan professor of law emeritus; and clarence poe, editor and businessman. it is awarded annually to outstanding current or incoming students who are residents of north carolina and who have demonstrated proficiency in both oral and written english. harold kimsey bennett scholarship established in 1997 by stephen bennett to honor his father, harold kimsey bennett, class of 1937. the award is based on merit, with preference being given to a resident of buncombe county or western north carolina. alan berman memorial scholarship established in 1993 in memory of alan berman, class of 1974. it is based on need and merit with preference given to gay and lesbian students or any student with an interest in advancing civil rights for gay and lesbian people. hal walker broadfoot scholarship established by mrs. hal broadfoot to honor her husband who graduated in 1953. it is based on merit or need, and preference is given to a rising second- or third-year student from north carolina. thornton h. brooks memorial scholarship established by the firm of brooks, pierce, mclendon, humphrey & leonard of greensboro, n.c., in memory of thornton h. brooks, class of 1934, for a second- or third-year member of the north carolina law review. the professor lissa broome center for banking and finance scholarship established in 2001 by the board of advisors of the unc school of law?s center for banking and finance in honor of lissa broome, its director. awarded on the basis of scholastic and writing ability as indicated by membership on the board of editors of the north carolina banking institute journal and financial need. barry s. brown memorial scholarship established in memory of barry s. brown, class of 1984. recipients are selected on the basis of meritorious performance in law school when examined in light of their academic record and personal circumstances. travis taylor brown memorial scholarship established in 2003 in memory of travis taylor brown, class of 1932. the award is given to an entering student who has been a north carolina resident for at least the last five years and has a demonstrated financial need. the professor robert byrd scholarship established in 2001 by aaron richard golub, class of 1967, to honor professor byrd?s outstanding achievements in the fields of torts, remedies, and law and medicine. in addition to being dean of the unc school of law from 1974 to 1979, byrd served as editor-in-chief of the north carolina law review and served for three years in the u.s. army judge advocate general corps. the scholarship is based on scholastic achievement and financial need. graham m. carlton scholarship established in 1987 by the family of the late graham m. carlton, class of 1947. awards are restricted to residents of north carolina. clarkson family scholarship established in 2005 by brian mark clarkson, class of 1987, the clarkson family scholarship is awarded to students who have a demonstrated financial need, with preference given to students with children or to a non-traditional student.class of 2000 endowed public interest scholarship established in 2000, the award is used to support a need-based scholarship for a student who demonstrates a strong commitment to public interest law. cowell family scholarship established in 2005 by marion a. cowell jr., class of 1964, and norma cowell, the cowell family scholarship seeks to help assure a diverse student body by providing support to an economically or socially disadvantaged student. e. s. w. dameron sr. scholarship established in 1965 by the sons of e. s. w. dameron sr., class of 1907, to provide annual scholarships to students who have demonstrated superior character or academic performance during law school. peter k. daniel memorial scholarship established in 2000 by family, classmates and friends in memory of peter k. daniel, class of 1986. awarded to a second-year law student who has demonstrated an exceptional commitment to community service, an entrepreneurial spirit, a strong work ethic and strength of character. james e., jr., and carolyn b. davis memorial scholarship established by the family and friends of james e. davis, jr., class of 1973, and awarded on a merit basis to students who have demonstrated outstanding scholarship. christy deal memorial scholarship established in 1993 by the family of christy deal, class of 1995, at the time of her death. it is based on need, with preference given to out-of-state students who show need as a result of continuing medical expenses or other serious challenges. robert d. dearborn memorial scholarship established in 1993 by the law firm of moore & van allen and by family and friends of the late robert dewitt dearborn, class of 1975. awards are based on academic achievement and financial need. franklin t. dupree, sr., memorial scholarship established in 1983 in honor and memory of franklin t. dupree sr., class of 1912, who practiced law in angier, n.c., for more than 50 years, by his sons, for a student genuinely in need and who plans to practice law in north carolina. the thomas r. eller, jr., scholarship fund established in 2003 in honor of thomas r. eller, jr., class of 1951, who distinguished himself as a champion of consumer rights while a member of the n.c. utilities commission. scholarship awards are based upon residency in rural north carolina, demonstrated financial need, potential for achievement as indicated by a sound scholastic record and potential for contribution to the social concerns of society. the kathrine robinson everett scholarship established in 2002 in memory of kathrine robinson everett, class of 1920. everett was one of the first women to graduate with a degree in law from unc-chapel hill, at a time when other law schools refused to accept women as law students. this award is based on academic merit. esphur foster scholarship established in 2004 in honor of esphur foster?s 28-year career at the unc school of law, this scholarship is awarded based on demonstrated financial need with preference given to a single-parent student. secondary preference is given to students with children and tertiary preference is given to non-traditional students. beth fleishman and richard boyette scholarship established in 1989 by beth fleishman and richard boyette, members of the class of 1977, and awarded on the basis of sound academic ability and/or financial need. nicholas t. and alma s. goudes scholarship established in 1985 by the goudes family to be awarded each year to an incoming or current law student with exceptional academic abilities. wallace r. gray scholarship established in 1987 by wallace r. gray, class of 1953, and awarded based on merit to a member of the entering class. william henry holderness and william edward elmore scholarship established in 1996 and awarded on the basis of ability as indicated by a sound scholastic record, financial need, public service and community involvement. recipients are residents of north carolina. the scholarship is renewable contingent upon the recipient maintaining a grade point average of 3.0. reef c. ivey ii bicentennial challenge scholarship fund established in 1989 by reef c. ivey ii, class of 1968, for deserving students with financial need. mildred m. and william a. johnson scholarship awarded on the basis of need to residents of north carolina who have exhibited outstanding academic performance. sarah graham kenan fund established in 1976 by the kenan family to provide scholarships for entering students based on merit and need. the j. russell kirby public service scholarship established in 2001 by david f. kirby to honor his father, sen. j. russell kirby, class of 1948. this scholarship is intended to foster, recognize and reward service as epitomized by sen. kirby. this award is given to a student who has been selected as a chancellors' scholar at the unc school of law. preference is given to students from eastern north carolina who intend to pursue a career of public service in government, politics or education. c. ted leonard, jr., scholarship established by friends and family in memory of c. ted leonard, jr., who was a member of class of 1956. the professor martin louis scholarship established in 1996 by aaron richard golub, class of 1967, to honor the memory of professor martin louis. the award is based on superior merit in the subjects of civil and criminal procedure. charles s. mangum, jr., scholarship established from the estate of charles s. mangum to provide merit scholarships to students in the entering class who, upon satisfactory performance, retain the scholarship for the three years of law school. l. a. martin scholarship established in 1979 by a bequest of judge lister a. martin as a memorial to his grandson, martin n. erwin. w. ellis meehan scholarship fund established in 1989 by ellis meehan, member of the class of 1941 and a football all-american nominee from catawba college. this scholarship provides need-based scholarship assistance to deserving law students. moore & van allen pllc chancellors' scholars program established in 1993 by the law firm of moore & van allen pllc to provide scholarship assistance based on academic merit. judge naomi e. morris memorial scholarship established in 1987 as a permanent tribute to naomi elizabeth morris, class of 1955, who served as chief judge of the n.c. court of appeals from 1979 to 1982. mumma family scholarship established in 2001 by christine mumma, class of 1998, and awarded based on financial need with preference given to a single student with custody of a child/children. n.c. soft drink association/fred o. bowman scholarship established by the n.c. soft drink association in memory of its executive director, fred bowman. it provides for one or more annual scholarships, usually to incoming students who have demonstrated need and are residents of north carolina. the warren seipp and barbara stockton perry scholarship established in 2003 through a bequest from warren seipp perry, this scholarship honors warren seipp perry's and barbara stockton perry's (both graduates of the class of 1950) abiding love for and interest in the unc school of law. this scholarship is awarded to a north carolina resident whose leadership and potential have been demonstrated through a sound academic record. gregory douglas, daryl geoffrey, christopher kelly porter chancellors? scholarship fund established in 1993 by w. travis porter, class of 1960, and his wife, to support scholarship awards for students selected as chancellors? scholars. augustus barker raymer memorial scholarship established in 1988 to honor the memory of augustus barker raymer, class of 1930, and awarded on the basis of academic merit and promise of distinction in the field of law. nancy k. rhoden scholarship established in 1990 by the parents of nancy k. rhoden, in memory of her as an outstanding faculty member at the unc school of law. it is awarded on the basis of need and merit to a law student with interest in the legal aspects of medicine, bioethics or related fields. the larry m. rosenstein family endowed scholarship established in 2001 by lawrence and marilyn van derbur atler to honor the memory of larry rosenstein, class of 1966, who was an expert in agricultural insurance law. the award is made to seawell and edward h. seawell. chief justice walter parker stacy scholarship fund established in 1986 by horace stacy, jr., class of 1956, in honor and in memory of chief justice walter p. stacy, a 1908 graduate of the university and a recipient in 1923 of an honorary ll.d. it is awarded annually to a student who is a resident of north carolina or who was born in north carolina. kirby sullivan scholarship established in 1997 by kirby sullivan, class of 1950, and awarded on the basis of ability as indicated by a sound scholastic record and financial need. w. frank taylor scholarship established in 1985 and in recognition of the outstanding service of frank taylor, class of 1914, to the state of north carolina as state senator and speaker of the n. c. house of representatives and as long-time member of the board of trustees of unc-chapel hill. preference is given to north carolina residents from wayne county or duplin county. the helen guerrant watson fund established in 1994 by richard n. watson, class of 1974, to honor his mother, helen guerrant watson. this award is based on academic merit or financial need. the judge hugh a. wells scholarship established in 1994 by friends and family of judge hugh a. wells, class of 1952, to honor his retirement from the n. c. court of appeals. this award is given to a north carolina resident who shows outstanding character and leadership potential and has financial need. rachel m. and charles h. whedbee scholarship established in 1997 by the estate of rachel m. whedbee and the hon. charles h. whedbee, class of 1933. awarded on the basis of merit to a north carolina resident with preference given to a resident of pitt county. willis whichard scholarship established in 1990 by the hon. willis p. whichard, class of 1965, in degree from the school of law and the department of city and regional planning for work with organizations that promote social justice and, when possible, the specific purpose of affordable housing. the womble carlyle sandridge & rice minority scholarship program established in 2004 by the womble carlyle firm, the scholarship is awarded to a minority student based on superior academic
