1. presentation of the organization -
mpc (chabe peasant movement) was founded on sept. 27, 1990 in chabe quarter, the 4th rural section in the locality of gwomn community. today it has 23 groups with 10 members each, so the organization has 230 people.
objective of mpc:
improve the socio-economic conditions of members and the rest of the population.
2. project needs
chabe is 36 kilometers from vil gwomn, and the peasants plant beans, corn, peanuts, coffee, and vegetables like cabbage, carrots, green onions, beets, lettuce, garlic, etc. after this agricultural activity, the largest activities of the people are commerce and breeding.
however, as of today, mpc members have said that they have had a lot of hardships with the destruction of the haitian pig in 1980 and the flooding from hurricane jean which reduced the animal population. as a consequence of all this, organization members income has declined considerably so that they don't know what to do to make the situation better so they can leave this difficult economic situation.
in reflection with the organization, mpc wants to attack this problem with a goat breeding enterprise but doesn't have the economic means to start realize such a project. mpc asked lambi fund for financial support for a goat breeding project in the area that would benefit all the organization members.
3. project objective -
a) general objective -
improve goat breeding in the area by introducing improved bucks to mate with haitian female goats.
b) specific objective -
permit organization members to develop more knowledge about goat breeding
increase the goat population in the area
establish a system of goat multiplication which will permit each organization member in the next three years to have a small amount of goats to raise.
4. project strategy -
the organization has fenced in two parts of land that measure about one hectare each. after they finish fencing in the land, they will plant food for the goats to eat. since the question of food is set, lambi will give the organization money necessary to buy 33 goats, 30 females and 3 improved males.
so that the goats will always have food, the organization will rotate the goats from one site to another, so that the food can grow back.
to take care of the goats, lambi fund will help the organization in the first year with a veterinary pharmacy with medicines for sickness and hire a veterinary agent during the year. however, in the second year, the salary of the veterinary agent will be the responsibility of the organization. in this way, for mpc to find the money to replace the medicines and to pay the veterinary agent, they will keep 75% of the baby goats to sell so they can continue the project.
before these project activities can start, lambi fund and the organization will engage a veterinary technician to conduct training on goat breeding for the organization's members. lambi fund will conduct a weeklong training on organizational development and project management to benefit the members of mpc.
finally, lambi fund will help the organization put in place all the structure necessary for the project to run well and benefit the members and the rest of the population.
