my taxi mate who'd leant me the scooter the last two days at 7:00am, somehow i managed to pack my bag within 20 minutes of finishing a shower.. so the guys looking around for the next bus to port-au-prince for me and i've already told him i wanted to get in the front with the driver as it gives more space for slighly a dearer ticket.. all the buses that we go past have the drivers cab full so i opted to get the real experience in the back and share the seats with the 60 odd locals.. i managed to get the back row which gave me a little extra space, and for once the big guy next to me didn't want to greedily claim his territory by spreading his knee caps as far as part as possible... instead i had to fight for space with some 50 year old lady. she and her son took up the space of two seats, which is really meant for three and half according to caribbean standards.. the first half of the journey the battle would go on to claim an inch of seat space between us.. my tacktic was on every bump.. on the way down i'd edge into her.. her tactic was just to nudge me every 5 minutes..the journey which cost 35 haiten dollars took over 6 hours and my bum was pretty numb when it came to get off.. i should of changed buses in leogane a 1hr and a half back but choose to carry on for ease of changing buses than for any circulatory problems.. the bus dropped everyone off very handily next to the jacmel bus stop so tried to find a couple of minutes to stretch my legs before i boarded an white old usa school bus, the bus was half full of vendors selling bread, biscuits, bottles of soft drinks and weanted.. one guy was trying to sell me a battery powered beard razor.. this journey was a bit of a killer, my legs had even less room as the row of seats i was on was designed for 4 school children but on that day had eight adults which included one big girl too.. the jorney took another 3 hours and as i had a window seat i got to see the views of the seas, mountains and plains around us.. the woman in front of me was also travel sick, the guy in front of her had his right shoulder splattered with ricocheting puke whilst i managed to duck in time with just a couple of drops hitting my cheeck and forehead, normally i find things hit me in the eye and mouth so felt quite lucky to have been hit where i was..my lp guidebook states that 'the new jacmel terminal is 2 miles out of town' so when i got off i asked the motocycle taxi how much to the guesthouse and he replied 25 gordes.. which is ok for a 2 mile ride, we got 2 meters and he ran out of petrol so i waited for he to push the bike across the road to refill his tank and then we were off again.. literally one block from where the bus dropped me off is the guesthouse.. i was on the back of the bike for less than 20 seconds, i started laughing telling him i could have walked, but he still wanted 25 goudes, as he had a sence of humour about it i gave him 15 goudes and he thanked me and when away to carry on his work.. the time was now 5:30pm.last night i walked around the town a little bit before i found a bar/restuarant that had a balcony to people watch over and have a few beers.. one guy, cigar and weed sellar/beggar found me and wouldn't leave, telling how he has no money but has 3 children and a wife.. i told him i can't help everyone that comes to talk to me and tried to pay him to go away, i gave him 20 goudes, but he started asking for 50 goudes and kept pestering me whilst i just wanted to chill and drink a beer.. when he first started to talk to me, he was telling me how nice jacmel is, when i was ignoring him, he was telling me that i'm gonna have problems here, i managed to hold an argument in creole and he left.. i keep on bumping into him round the city today but i'm keeping with the silent treatment otherwise i could end up in trouble.jacmel i've just learnt doesn't have electricity between 6am and 2pm except sunday which gets it all day, so this morning was pretty hot without the fan and couldn't get online till 2.. haiti seems at first to have 2 or 3 interent cafes on each street, it's when you go in you find out they don't work, have no telephone connection or have been turned into a clothes shop since the words 'cyber cafe' were painted on top you realise they is only a couple in town, and finding one with a good speed connection is hard, the one i'm in now is pretty good is a windows 98 machine running windows 2000.i'm starting to read the jamaica chapter in my guidebook a lot recently so will probably be there in a couple of weeks, which will give me time to settle in before the reggae sumfest begins on the 15th of july.. latest comments (0) be the first to post a comment if you like this entry, search for other entries
